A major problem with translation is that the words of the speaker is lost. After translating, you are no longer able to appreciate the actual words the speaker chose to say. You lose out on the flavor of the speakers language. You lose out on the order and sequencing of the phrases and sentences used by the speaker. All of this is lost.
This is especially the case for Divine revelation. Translating words of God destroys the power of it. Because translating it makes it no longer His words. The words were carefully chosen for a reason.
This is why it’s amazing learning about self esteem directly from Surah Yusuf, in the unadulterated Arabic Language. It’s such an emotionally exhilarating and mind blowing experience, (that is, before I fell into major depression.).
Trauma, and an unhealthy early child relationship is the basis and foundation of the majority, if not all psychological problems. And Allah knows this.
والله عليم بما يعملون
God knows exactly what they did
The next verse clarifies what exactly did they do? What was the effects and aftermath and damage done by how they interacted and dealt with?
و شروه بثمن بخس دراهم معدودة و كانوا فيه من الزاهدين
They valued him as worthless, sold him for a measly price, and on top of that, could care even less. It didn’t phase them in then slightest.
Look at how the story is told. And how the last ayah explains exactly what is meant by the previous ayah. That Allah knows what they did, and then the next ayah explains what exactly was done; namely, that they treated him worthlessly. Bingo! WORTHLESS. Isn’t that exactly the issue we have dealing with our emotional self esteem issues or psychological disorders? The root problem of a self esteem or self worth problem. Caused by somebody close to you, who also had some self esteem problem themselves.
