How many a time have I heard people close to me tell me, “You need to relax.” “Take a break, and take it easy.” “If you go the gym, you will feel relaxed.” “If you take a shower, you will be relaxed.” “Go for a long walk or drive, it’s relaxing.”
To be honest, OCD and stress manifests in so many unique ways from person to person, that one person’s relaxation could be another’s stressor. Even for the same person, something that was relaxing to them one day, ends up being a stressor for them the next day. I can personally attest to this.
Take a simple example of socializing. I know somebody who is always stressed out, but when they go and socialize with old family friends, their stress melts away and they start feeling better. But then when I go and mingle with those same people, it becomes a big burden and stress on me that I can’t wait to get out of.
So what is going on? A number of factors. The belief system of the person is at play, their approach to the situation as well. And more importantly, their intention behind the action. Why are they doing the activity? Is it to make other people happy? To the socially anxious, that stresses them out. Or is it to make Allah happy, and purely to gain more prime real estate in jannah. In this case they will feel more relaxed and at ease, and may enjoy doing it, because there is a sweetness and delight that comes to the heart when something is done 100% purely for the sake of Allah.
So let it be an inward examination as to why you’re getting stressed out. It’s not REALLY the stressor, it’s the stressee and their beliefs.
